Opposed the Miracle City Chemical Treatment Proposal, protecting the Hutchinson River.

AFFORDABILITY
Advocating for more affordable housing and vibrant neighborhoods while combating rising costs in our community.

Secured a $51 million investment for Co-op City residents, helping to significantly reduce an 8.1% carrying charge to Co-op City residents.

Used his office to offer free income tax preparation for seniors 62 years of age or older who reside in the Bronx.

Advocated for tenant protections through legislation such as the Housing Stability and Tenant Protection Act of 2019.

Worked to support veterans and their families in accessing benefits and transitioning to civilian life, and for allowing seniors to downsize without penalty.

A Lifetime of Service to the Bronx.
Michael R. Benedetto is a lifelong resident of Northeast Bronx, whose 35-year teaching career on elementary and secondary levels reflects his unwavering dedication to public service, his community, and education.
Starting at Our Lady of Assumption School, he later transitioned to the New York Public School system specializing in teaching mentally and physically challenged children at P.S. 160, The Walt Disney School, in Co-op City in the Bronx.
He remained at P.S. 160 for 28 years until elected to the State Assembly in 2004.
During his tenure, Assemblyman Benedetto initiated groundbreaking initiatives, including the first Olympics for multiply-handicapped children, and served as an instructor for special education teachers. He was also deeply involved in his school’s talented and gifted program and remained an active member of the teacher's union throughout his career.
For this work and more, he was presented the New York Lung Association award for contributions to preventing children from smoking; the New York City Adaptive Physical Education Department Award; the FIAME Excellence in Teaching Award; as well as a prestigious citation from the American Federation of Teachers (AFT for service to the cause of teacher unionism.)
He also received the All-American Columbus Award for his dedicated community service.
Since assuming office in 2005, Assemblyman Michael R. Benedetto has been a steadfast representative of the 82nd Assembly District. He currently chairs the Education Committee, and is a member of the Labor Committee, Puerto Rican/Hispanic Task Force, Rules Committee, Subcommittee on Oversight of Minority and Women-Owned Business Enterprises Member, and Subcommittee on Retention of Homeownership and Stabilization of Affordable Housing.
With over 40 bills on Safety, Education, and Affordability sponsored in his last term alone, and nearly 300 bills primarily sponsored throughout his tenure, Assemblyman Benedetto continues to champion the needs of his constituents and fight for a better future for all.
